Rural Development

Sustainable approaches to rural development

Ecosystems believes that by integrating rural development activities, the effectiveness and sustainability of community development projects will be enhanced.

The current rural development landscape consists of a diversity of isolated community projects such as poultry, sewing, gardening, tourism, craft and feeding schemes. There is currently very little integration between these projects even though they are often situated in close proximity to each other.

Integrated development clusters

Ecosystems promotes the clustering of projects and activities to maximise the benefits and reduce the operating costs.

For example a poultry project should always be integrated with a gardening project. This would allow for the chicken manure to be easily composted and efficiently used to grow crops. A camp system can be used to allow the farming of free range poultry products that will also benefit the garden through removal of pests.

Sewing and craft projects can be clustered and integrated with waste management systems. Marketing, administration, transport and often operating costs can be reduced as these are now shared with other projects.
