The purpose of this project is to provide a support centre for sustainable rural development in Zululand which will be used to develop previously disadvantaged communities.


The Zululand Centre for Sustainable Development

The overall objectives of the centre are to ensure that skills are transferred to the local community through an intensive and ongoing education, training and mentorship approach. The establishment of a network of sustainable infrastructures will be used at the centre to demonstrate the process through a hands on practical approach.

The centre will specialise in relevant issues which are required for development in South Africa.
These will include the following:

  • Integrated Sustainable Agriculture
  • Ecotourism
  • Micro Enterprises
  • Waste Management
  • Craft and curio Development
  • Traditional Muthi Promotion and cultivation

We will also be developing and testing sustainable systems which work in rural areas, these will be projects like:

  • Alternative energy sources (biogas, solar, wind, gas and manual)
  • Simple water purification (UV and ozone)
  • Micro agricultural machinery
  • Enviro friendly toilets (waterless)
  • Integrated waste management systems (recycling, crafts, etc.)
  • Rural laundries (to prevent water contamination)
  • Alternative transport systems
  • Alternative building techniques
  • Alternative agricultural opportunities (fish farming, bee keeping, rabbits, geese, ducks, guineafowl, broilers etc.)
